There is a fundamental misunderstanding out there when discerning what part of the grass plant is the most important to focus on. Upon hearing the phrase “water your grass to keep it green”, most people tend to think they are replenishing the blades of the grass. There is also a misunderstanding that when grass turns brown, there is an issue with the blades – the part of the grass that is visible for all to see. For others who hear this phrase, they may think ‘of course it’s not the blades – it’s all about the roots.’ Now, don’t get us wrong – the entire grass plant is obviously very important. But there really is a Holy Grail – a secret, key source – to growing dark green, lush, healthy grass… and it is not found in the blade nor in the root. The Holy Grail of green, healthy grass can be found in the Crown of the grass plant. Located at the base of the grass plant and closest to the soil, the Crown is the part of the grass that is found in between the root system and the blades.

We describe the Crown as the Holy Grail because it is basically the command center for the plant. It is where data is received by the plant and turned into information to be disbursed to the rest of the plant. The result of this then becomes visible to our human eyes. We can compare the Crown of the grass plant to the Brain of our own human body. The Brain is one of the core components to the human body’s nervous system. It controls all the voluntary actions of the body. It also makes things easier for us to understand by interpreting touch, temperature, sight, sound, pain, and other reasoning abilities into something that our bodies can comprehend and then create a result or effect from. The information from a certain experience can then be stored in our nervous systems so that we remember and translate the data into information much quicker the next time a similar situation occurs.

The Crown of the grass plant acts in a very similar manner to that of the human brain – it tells the blades of grass when they are too old or too damaged to be useful and then tells the plant to produce replacements. This central command center of the plant greatly affects the overall density of a lawn. If the roots or the blades of a grass plant gets damaged, both will grow back. But, if we kill the Crown of the grass plant, it will die. In simple terms then, if the Crown is kept healthy, the grass is alive and thriving.

So, now that you know the Holy Grail – the Crown as the end-all, be-all to a grass plant – how do you make sure to keep the Crown in its healthiest state? Read about it in this article!
